One
of the most challenging jobs in the world is that of the teacher. Teachers are
charged with preparing youth for the present and the future. They have to
instill in children the skills and knowledge that they are going to rely on to
navigate the world. Teachers touch the lives of so many people, yet they
receive very little recognition (or pay) for their work.
Chad
Harp was able to live life for two years as a teacher in a slightly different
way. From 2004 through 2005, Chad Harp lived in Tokyo, Japan. There he worked
for NOVA International Language School. The school focused on teaching English
to businessmen as well as providing private lessons for school students looking
to improve their proficiency in English.
Teaching
in Japan gave Chad Harp insight into what
teachers have to deal with on a daily basis. It can be overwhelming at first to
know that you are responsible for the learning of an entire class. Of course,
the more time one spends teaching, the better they get at accomplishing the
goals they need to accomplish. Once they become proficient at that, they are
able to accomplish things with their students above and beyond the goals and
expectations of others.
For
that reason, Chad Harp thinks that teaching is one of the most fascinating
careers. The fact that one is directly influencing the present and future life
of hundreds of people a year means that teachers are a unique profession. They
have a daunting task ahead of them but they still persevere. Chad Harp himself
didn't have a strong enough passion for teaching to continue with the career,
but he is grateful for the time he spent teaching. There really is no other way
to learn about what a teacher must deal with than by doing it yourself.
